Just a thought

I have so many friends and co-workers that are really trying to eat "healthy".
So what happens, they go to Whole Foods or other health food stores and they buy products like these;
 http://www.backtonaturefoods.com/

You see how amazing they are at marketing?? Wholesome stuff right??
As nice a picture as they paint, the reality is, THIS IS NOT FOOD.
If you want a "cracker" go the extra mile and make something with ingredients that you know and can identify. Girl Gone Primal just had a really easy and good one for example.

Lastly, guess who owns that company?...................................Kraft Foods. Nuff said.

Kraft thank you for taking steps towards a healthier America. (sarcasm of course).

*sigh* It would be nice to see real food receive half the marketing efforts as a major food company.

To be fair though, some of these food companies, while not selling the best food for us, are moving towards or more natural less processed product. We can only hope that the trend continues far enough. Every time people shop at their grocery store they vote the kind of food the big companies will market to us.

You are being hard on our friends at Kraft...er, I mean Back to Nature. I mean, check out their chocolate chunk cookies:

UNBLEACHED ENRICHED FOUR (WHEAT FLOUR, NIACIN, REDUCED IRON, THIAMINE MONONITRATE, RIBOFLAVIN, FOLIC ACID), SEMISWEET CHOCOLATE (CHOCOLATE, SUAR, DEXTROSE, COCOA BUTTER, SOY LECITHIN, VANILLA EXTRACT), EVAPORATED CANE JUICE, EXPELLER-PRESSED OLEIC SAFFLOWER OIL, BROWN RICE SYRUP, BAKING SODA, SEA SALT. CONTAINS: WHEAT, SOY. MANUFACTURED ON EQUIPMENT THAT PROCESSES MILK.

Really, this screams "Back to Nature"

Matthew,
Yes there are "some" that produce less processed products. Sadly, those well intended small companies have a tough time keepig their doors open. The big boy companies (operating uner the guise of small company) operate efficiently with low grade ingredients, and turn good profits. They do this by an ever ongoing quest o bring the cost of production down. This is accomplished by soutrcing the cheapest ingredients they can get their hands on. Sad but true.

Jeff,
Thank you ;-)

Mark,
I hear you!!

Wait, wait! Don't forget their saving grace (not to mention that darn it anyway, I can't live without cheese and Kraft is just about the only non-processed cheddar I can get here in the Middle East!): Tazo Teas are owned by Kraft and Starbucks. I am willing to forgive much for a nice cuppa tea. But then, maybe that's just me. And *sigh*, if wishful thinking and nutritional ignorance could make you fit I would be right up there with the Olympic athletes. Not so much. Perhaps another steaming hot cup would make me feel better...

People believe everything the cardboard box tells them. It's really, really sad.

As for big companies devouring the small, organic companies - for me it depends on the situation.

I will not buy Dagoba chocolate (Hershey) but I will by Celestial Seasonings (Hinez).

Lots of little variables for me. But I do the best I can. Really, really trying to just go local on as much as I can.

Natalie,
The Tazo cold teas have a lot of sugar ;-(
Where you are you can probably some amazing mint tea.

Jen,
Local is where it's at!! Just picked up some colliflower that was a sight to behold compared to what you see in the stores.

Jay,
I make sauerkraut and I make refrigerator pickles (japanese style)....hey maybe a good topic for a post. ;-)
How do you make your Kefir? Do you add it to yogurt?

Marc;
Nice jobs on vids, you the man.
I just find the best whole milk I can, add the Kefir grains, wait 2-4 days, have Kefir. Plan to seperate the milk and whey, use the whey for fermenting.
